Organization Profile

LGBTQ Northwest Indiana Inc.

Mission: To fill the LGBTQ+ support void between Chicago and North-Central Indiana by providing programs, education, and resources; promoting visibility, understanding, and acceptance; and advocating for human rights, protections, and equality. Additional Background: When Amari Victoria discovered in 2017 that she was a transgender woman, she and her supportive spouse, Elisabeth Menning, found themselves traveling 1-2.5 hours away to attend transgender support groups, spouse support groups such as PFLAG, and affirming health care. In the summer of 2018, Amari and Elisabeth each incorporated a non-profit organization - LGBTQ Northwest Indiana Inc. and PFLAG Crown Point Northwest Indiana Inc – to bring those support services closer to home, and immediately started offering transgender and PFLAG support groups meetings in NWI. In the summer of 2019, these two organizations produced the first annual, free, family-friendly, indoor Pride festival in this immediate area – 2020 NWI Pride. The responsibility for producing future NWI Pride festivals now lies with the NWI Pride Events Committee of LGBTQ Northwest Indiana, and plans are underway for 2020 NWI Pride, scheduled for June 6, 2020 in Highland, Indiana. LGBTQ Northwest Indiana Inc. will eventually obtain a physical location and open an LGBTQ+ Community Center for members of the LGBTQ+ community and their allies.
